#MusicFriday – New music release – LE DEVA

We met Le Deva when they released their first song in support of the LGBT+ community in Italy, the song was called "L'amore merita" (that according to the lyrics I would translate as "Love deserves to be freely lived") - and now they're out with a new single "Brillare da sola". (tr. shining alone). The group was born in 2016 and is a girl-band who had a past in talent shows in Italy. In their songs they have always been singing about equal rights and equal love for everyone. "Brillare da sola" is an invitation to find in our-selves the strength to face our everyday "battles" and to stop looking for support from other people that sometimes may suddenly disappear from our lives and leave us down. Roberta Pompa, Greta Manuzzi, Laura Bono and Verdiana Zangaro form Le Deva and this new s...

Dolche releases Exotic Diorama – a new album that touches our souls.

We spoke to Dolche a few weeks ago and had so much fun with her unique style and costumes. Now she gave birth to her new album and shortly after to her child. Dolche is an independent artist that is able to mix in her music sounds and emotions coming from all over the world. Her new album has been produced between Rome, New York, Beirut and Visby, and it is a very important album - both for the artist but for our entire community - as it is all about LGBT+ life and violence against women.  The album takes his name from the famous dioramas that we can find at the National Museum of Natural History of New York , where each song creates an independent world made of musical influences and atmospheres so distant from one another but  still so matching amongst them. You can dowload an...

Pope Francis and Gay Civil Partnerships: the following day.

"Gay people have the right to a family and to a normal citizenship". Yesterday Pope Francis gave hopes to all those LGBT+ people in Italy who are still waiting on a proper law that would protect them and give them dignity in a country that has still got a lot to do in terms of equal rights. Toda - instead - after all the astonishment that Pope Francis’ words caused both to those conservative bigots and to the LGBT+ population around the world, here we have a little stop to all that joy: "Be careful not to reach wider consequences than the premises. Francis simply says that if two people, even of the same sex, decide to live together, in a form of stable coexistence, they have the right to ensure that their choices are protected. But does not in any way open to marriage between h...

Film recommendations: Little Girl and A Perfectly Normal Family

Two films available this week explore issues around the trans experience, with delicacy and much-needed kindness. Little Girl is a French documentary which follows 8-year-old Sasha, who knows she is a girl, despite being assigned male at birth. She wrestles her way with other people at school, in her dance class, but her family are supportive and know she must be allowed to follow her own path. Filmmaker Sébastien Lifshitz, who regularly explores marginalised and queer experiences, follows Sasha and her family over the course of a year. The film, which is beautifully shot, delicately captures moments of joy and challenges the family face. This is an important film for anyone trying to understand the issues faced by trans children in a world which frequently doesn’t understand them. ...

Ana Brnabic, Serbia’s first Lesbian PM wins second term elections.

Serbia’s first female and first openly gay prime minister - Ana Brnabic - wins a second term during an election-time where people have raised claims of corruption. Ana Brnabic is the leader of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, which has been nominated by the Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic to remain in office after securing 188 deputies in the 250-seat parliament. She was able to win the elections for a second term after those held on 21st June got boycotted by the opposition accusing the President of silencing all those media which did not agree with his rules.  Mr. Vucic looked ahead and during a press conference last Monday defended Ana Brnabic from all accuses, saying the she “didn’t use her term of office to benefit foreign or local power centers, she just fought for the...

Viktor Orban wants gay people to ‘leave our children alone’ in a homophobic attack to lesbian Cinderella book.

The Far-Right and homophobic prime minister of Hungary decided that a fairy-tale story book was way too dangerous for Hungarian children. That he is such a homophobic character very linked to the same politics of his fellow-politician Mr. Putin, we never had any doubt about, and now he is attacking a story book for children that is trying to show the reality of our days and features LGBT+. The book itself is a sweetened reflection of a normal society, and its characters include people with disabilities, the elderly, the poor and people from minority ethnic backgrounds having the majority of the stories with no references to the LGBT+ world if not just some light references, the far-right party in Hungary, together with the help of the Prime Minister, have seized upon the handful that d...

LGBT+ Users take over Twitter with the hashtag #proudboys to fight extreme right group.

Members of the LGBT+ community from all around the world have been making #ProudBoys trend on twitter by posting images of gay pride and pictures of themselves kissing their loved ones. This is what we can easily call a “peaceful fight” against something belonging to far right groups which are not so LGBT-friendly (or not at all). The Proud Boys group has denied being a homophobic organisation, but they are indeed a far-right and anti-migrant organisation. This is why actors, Canadian armed forces, users from all over the world have started sharing supporting pictures to drown out all posts related to this group. Who are these Proud Boys? Founded in 2016 by Canadian-British right-wing activist Gavin McInnes, the Proud Boys is a far-right, anti-immigrant, all-male group. The group ...

Film recommendations: RBG and On the Basis of Sex

As we mourn the death at 87 of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and follow the news to see who will be appointed in her place, there are two films that help to tell the story of this inspiring woman. RBG is a 2018 documentary (Netflix) which traces the life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, legendary member of the US Supreme Court. It uses interviews with the judge herself as well as various of her associates, plus news clips and film of her at work and at play (particularly memorable are her trips to the opera and her legendary gym workouts). This is a loving and admiring film, with only one moment of criticism (when RBG openly attacked Trump), but it helpfully puts into context the story of her career and how she was so admired for her legal skills and continued fight for equal rights. Ginsburg was chall...
