Gillian Anderson Says She’s Pansexual, and Yes, We’re Listening!

Gillian Anderson has spoken openly about identifying as pansexual, putting a name to something the actor has discussed more fluidly for years.

Gillian Anderson has apparently looked at the internet and decided it needed something nice for once.

The X-Files and Sex Education star has described herself as pansexual in a new interview with The Australian, speaking openly about attraction, sexuality and her relationships with women when she was younger.

And before anyone starts shouting “coming out” in 72-point font, there is a little context. Anderson has talked about relationships with women before.

What is new is the label.

In the new interview, Anderson identified herself as “pan”, referring to pansexuality — attraction that is not limited by another person’s gender. She also discussed having relationships with women in her younger years.

The moment feels less like a dramatic celebrity revelation and more like somebody finding a word that comfortably describes something they have understood about themselves for years.

Which, frankly, is rather relatable.

Sexuality does not always arrive with fireworks, a PowerPoint presentation and a ceremonial raising of the Pride flag.

Sometimes you simply discover that one word fits better than another.

What does that mean?

Ok babes… we need some clarity here!

Pansexual means being attracted to people regardless of gender — because apparently chemistry didn’t get the memo about sticking to neat little boxes. 💅

Gender can still be part of attraction, of course, but it isn’t the gatekeeper. Think less “who are you allowed to fancy?” and more “is there a spark, babe?”

This isn’t the first time Anderson has discussed sexuality

Anderson spoke publicly about previous relationships with women as far back as 2012.

More recently, she has discussed whether terms including bisexual or pansexual might describe her sexuality.

The new interview appears to move that conversation forward: she is now more directly using pansexual to describe herself.

And that distinction is worth keeping.

We love a queer celebrity moment at TGM, obviously. We are only human. But sexuality is not necessarily a before-and-after press release. People can understand themselves gradually. Labels can change. Some people use several. Some use none.

None of that makes an identity less valid.

So, what does pansexual mean?

Pansexuality generally describes the capacity for romantic or sexual attraction to people regardless of gender.

That does not mean a pansexual person is attracted to everybody.

In the same way that being gay does not mean fancying every man who walks past you in Tesco, being pansexual does not remove personal taste, chemistry or preference.

It simply means gender itself is not necessarily the determining boundary of attraction. The term overlaps with bisexuality for some people, while others experience the labels differently. There is no compulsory queer vocabulary exam at the door.

Why celebrity visibility still matters

Celebrity sexuality should never be treated as public property.

Nobody owes the world a label.

But when somebody chooses to talk openly about being LGBTQ+, visibility can still matter — particularly for people who recognise something of themselves in that experience.

Anderson occupies an interesting place in queer popular culture already.

Her roles — not least the magnificently sex-positive Dr Jean Milburn in Sex Education — have helped make her something of a queer internet favourite.

Apparently, Gillian Anderson looked at that demographic and thought: fine, you can have another reason.

Very generous.

No dramatic reinvention required

Perhaps the nicest part of Anderson’s comments is how undramatic they are.

She has lived a life. She has had relationships. She has spoken about sexuality before.

And now she has a word she is comfortable using.

That’s it.

No scandal. No crisis. No “shocking confession”.

Just another human being talking about who she is.

And in an era when LGBTQ+ identities are so frequently transformed into political arguments, there is something quietly refreshing about that.
