Japanese Volleyball Player Rui Takahashi Comes Out as Gay

Japanese professional volleyball player Rui Takahashi has come out as gay, sharing a deeply personal message about the years he spent struggling to accept his sexuality and the people who eventually helped him embrace who he is.

The 26-year-old outside hitter plays for Suntory Sunbirds Osaka, one of Japan’s leading volleyball clubs, where he has been part of the squad since 2022. The club has also confirmed Takahashi as part of its 2026–27 roster.

Rui Takahashi opens up about being gay

Takahashi made the announcement on Instagram on 29 September, explaining that from a young age he had been frightened to confront one part of himself and had spent years questioning and denying it.

That part, he said, was the fact that he is gay.

His message was not framed as a dramatic revelation, but as the end of a much longer journey towards accepting himself. Takahashi explained that conversations with his younger brother, Japanese volleyball international Ran Takahashi, played an important role in that process. Spending around two years alongside Ran at the same club gave the brothers time to talk, and Rui said those conversations helped him begin to acknowledge his sexuality rather than fight against it.

Eventually, he wrote, he reached the point where he could feel that “it is okay to be myself as I am.”

Takahashi also thanked his family, teammates, club staff and others who had supported him, explaining that he wanted fans to hear the news directly from him as the new volleyball season approaches.

Why Rui Takahashi’s coming out matters

An athlete coming out should not need to become international news. Yet openly gay male athletes remain comparatively uncommon in high-level professional sport in Japan, making Takahashi’s decision particularly visible; AFP described his announcement as a rare case in Japanese sport.

And perhaps that is what makes his message resonate. There is no grand reinvention, no new version of Rui Takahashi suddenly appearing on court. He is the same athlete, brother and teammate he was yesterday — only now he has chosen to let the public know another part of him.

Takahashi said one of the reasons for speaking openly was the hope that his experience could help people who are struggling with their own sexuality.

For a story about coming out, that may ultimately be the most important part: being visible enough for somebody else to feel a little less alone.
