Film Recommendations: Two New Fascinating Films to Rent or Buy Now

Two intense, brilliant films, newly released online to rent or buy, give stark perspective on the lives of young women today. Neither is an easy watch but both are vital films that will stick with you for days to come – and should be viewed by men and women alike. Kitty Green’s intensely powerful The Assistant is one of the first films successfully to navigate the post-#MeToo world. Yet, despite its potentially explosive content, it is a brilliantly quiet and low-key film, which is, to be honest, the way so many people experience work-place bullying, sexism and micro-aggressions – as well as other forms of power-play. Although the film is about a Harvey Weinstein-style entertainment mogul, it is by no means particular to that situation, but will resonate with many people who have experi...

The library is now open, with Mrs. Kasha Davis’ Drag Story Time LIVE

RuPaul’s Drag Race alumnus Mrs. Kasha Davis has spent her quarantine entertaining fans, families and children with her bi-weekly online show Drag Story Time LIVE with MKD. Everyone’s favourite international housewife-sensation can be seen every Sunday and Wednesday (12:00 EST) looking fabulous in her suburban, fairy tale-telling extravaganza. The show is aimed at children of all ages and their families, with Mrs. Davis positioning herself as campy like Pee Wee Herman with the honestly of Mr. Roger – in a dress. Kasha says: “I love doing Story Time because I’m providing something special for children and their parents that was not available when I was a child." ‘Nay sayers will say Drag Story Time LIVE is pushing a “gay agenda” on children but I believe if they sit and listen,...

I thought it was a joke, but I was wrong. We had spoken about this beautiful movie and the touching story of the two characters in this post, and invited you to watch it on Prime Video by Amazon, but apparently, in the USA the streaming service has thought that some scenes had to be censored. https://twitter.com/strawhousefilms/status/1262924087766200321 Some twitter users reported that two important sex scenes had been cut from the streaming version of God's Own Country in the US, scenes that were not removed from the version that can be purchased on the same streaming service. https://twitter.com/JoshFromIndy/status/1262938810930757632 Apparently, Prime Video hasn't replied yet to explain the reasons behind this, but we are sure the answer won't be too late. Netflix stands up for LGBT+ characters

International streaming giant Netflix has defended the decision to host characters representing the LGBT+ community throughout its slate, in opposition of a derogatory tweet. The tweet featured a meme with characters from Spongebob Squarepants, suggesting that the use of queer characters in television programmes was unnecessary, stating: “Every damn new series”.  The succinct reply from the communications team at Netflix was simply, “Sorry you have yet to realize that every gay person is very necessary”. https://twitter.com/netflix/status/1258156383792279552 The response has so far provoked more than 660,000 likes, over 107,000 retweets and more than 9,500 responses - both positive and negative.
