Jake Daniels is a professional player for Blackpool FC and during an interview with Sky Sports News, the came out as gay and said he'd had "amazing support" from his teammates after telling them about his sexuality. Jake said he felt ready to be himself after "such a long time of lying" about his identity, and added: “For a long time I've thought I would have to hide my truth because I wanted to be, and now I am, a professional footballer. I asked myself if I should wait until I've retired to come out. No other player in the professional game here is out.”  Surely it is sad to think that this young guy should have had to wait untile retirement to finally live his life an...

Holocaust Memorial Day: the exercise of Remembering to Honour.

We remember… We are a people marked by the atrocities the hand of history has so unreluctantly laid bear our suffering. On January 27th, we all grieve together the loss of our loved ones and our people. We grieve those who entire generations have been wiped out and remember their names by lighting a candle, for the Jewish people are and will remain united by blood and by history. My family like so many others found themselves diminished to two or three survivors and those were the lucky ones. My mother’s side were a prosperous Portuguese Jewish family residing in Amsterdam, Holland. They were part of a historical community where tradition was valued, family was loved and religion was observed. The Okker’s came to Amsterdam as they were forced to flee Portugal - they were not strangers ...

Shoah: when remembering gives us hope for a better future.

For many of us, YomHaShoa - or day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Shoha - is a sad, almost mournful time every year. But then… why is it important to remember if it can hurt so much? As a gay and Jewish person, Remembering (and honouring) the victims of the Shoah is something I do almost every day, it is a good exercise for the memory, but also for my own sense of thankfulness: how lucky are we to be living in so much comfort and peace, in our houses, now? Certainly one could say that we do still have that feeling of “something’s still missing in my life”… but hey! We are here, we are safe, we are alive, and - again - in the full comfort of our own houses. My Grandmother - when still alive - used to remind me of how during deportation she had to flee her city, her parents escaped a...

Festival di Sanremo selects their first “transvestite” co-host: Drusilla Foer

After so many years and after great critiques over the too-catholic and family oriented style of Festival di Sanremo, Amadeus (the host) has finally given the LGBT+ people someone they can see themselves in, selecting Drusilla Foer as his co-host for the kermesse. The National Festival of the Italian Song - Festival di Sanremo 2022 - is about to start in less than 3 weeks, and after all the critiques received in the past years, for being “too catholic and/or family oriented”, their main Host - Amadeus - who’s already hosted Sanremo in the past, selected among others, Drusilla Foer to be his co-host during the festival. The choice, of course, comes as a big surprise for the Italian audience, that is used to a very long, too times boring, 5-evenings-event, where the winner also got the cha...

ISRAEL to finally allow surrogacy for same-sex couples!

A historic change in the faith of thousands of same-sex couples in the first Democratic Middle Eastern Country. Tuesday 4th December 2021,  was already a big day for Israel when single men are allowed to become parents but now, years and years of peaceful fights, finally made a little dream come true: Nitzan Horowitz - Israeli Health Minister - told a press conference (as reported on Reuters): “It is a historic day for the LGBTQ struggle in Israel". In fact, same sex couples will be allowed to finally have access to surrogacy treatments in Israel with no need to travel abroad to fulfil their dreams.  https://twitter.com/NitzanHorowitz/status/1478287973733044224?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1478287973733044224%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fattit...

PHILADELPHIA – the film about AIDS and Gay Love that shook the world.

Maybe too few young LGBT+ friends know, remember or have even ever watched this movie, but Philadelphia was and still is one of the first movies that opened the eyes of the world on the stigma of AIDS, Homosexuality and the gay community. On this World Aids Day I am willing to take you back in time, to when in 1993 (Europe saw it in 1994) Philadelphia (the movie) was released in the cinemas across the USA, touching the hearts of so many people, and talking about a very harsh, too often unspoken, issue: HIV stigma and homosexuality.  It is a movie that is hard to face, especially in some scenes, and because of the language used in it: but it is part of the real world that LGBT+ and HIV+ people had to face in those years. A movie that I remember having watched several times and different...

Having a fulfilling sexual life is fundamental for many people of different ages, and we do agree that sex is also a fantastic way to explore our bodies and become one only body with the other person(s) and to share with them a spiral of feelings and emotions that no words can express. So we thought about 5 golden rules to respect and follow to enjoy sex as much as possible and reduce the risk of contracting HIV, but before you start reading them, there is something you always have to remember. Sex is something you make using both your head and your body, so please, always feel your...

Santa’s Gay Love is what we all need for Christmas

Santa Claus pictured in a gay-love relationship in this heartwarming Norwegian tv spot, and marks 50 years since the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Norway (1972). The Norwegians Postal Services this year decided that yes, they wanted to promote their (apparently very reliable and on time) services, but they also wanted to touch the heart of millions of people… and not only in Norway. The clip depicts the developing and always stronger relationship between Santa Claus and another man, who he visits each Christmas over a number of years. https://youtu.be/tyQ6qD-u-J8 The clip is impressive, not only because it pictures Santa Claus in love with a man, but because it also touches themes which are very delicate and too many times left unspoken, such as loneliness and that feelin...

Switzerland announces dates for the first same-sex weddings in the country

After the life-changing referendum in the country, Switzerland announced that same-sex weddings will take place from 1st July 2022. You will surely remember the great victory of that 64.1% of voters that wanted equal rights for the Swiss population, and now, the government finally announced that the first same-sex weddings in the country will start to be celebrated from 1st July 2022. We do have to remember though, that since 2007, the country has allowed civil partnerships for same-sex couples. This big change in the constitution of the country, will also mean that same-sex couples will be allowed adopt children together, that was only restricted to straigh-married-couples in Switzerland before this law.  The Swiss Government also announced that starting on 1st January 2022, Sw...

UK: the NHS announces a game-changing HIV treatment injected just six times a year for all patients.

A new long-lasting injectable treatment is approved for use in the United Kingdom, and this could really improve the lives of those living with HIV. Could this be called a “liberation” from the daily tablet(s) treatment HIV patients are used to so far? Just today, in the UK, the NHS has been given the go-ahead to roll out injections taken every two months to manage the virus: results for this research were announced back in December 2020 here.   The new treatment approved by England and Wales’ National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the Scottish Medicines Consortium today, is a combination of two jabs taken every two months: this could actually help to ease the emotional burden of having to take daily tablets (1 to 4 generally) and something like 13,000 people w...
